Campo de Ourique is of the few areas of Lisbon that survived the 1755 earthquake and tsunami with only minor damage and, as a consequence, became a area of election. In the second half of the 1800s, the area saw a new demographic influx, with the development of grid pattern neighborhood anchored in rua Ferreira Borges. Many notable Portuguese authors, including Fernando Pessoa, lived here. Today it is the home of many shops and restaurants, has a well loved romantic garden- Jardim da Parada, the Mercado- market with gourmet food and wine stalls, and one of the most recognizable cemetery of the city- Prazeres. It is minutes away from the upscale Amoreiras shopping mall and from the neighborhood of Rato and Estrela with both Basilica da Estrela and Jardim da Estrela as popular attractions. The famous number 28 tram makes the connection to the Baixa/Downtown area as well as the other traditional Lisbon neighborhoods of Bairro Alto, Chiado, Graça and Alfama
